"Cattyarra"

This is my most recent commission of a marble mink bengal. She is an indoor cat so we thought it would be a great opportunity to place her in a natural garden environment for her portrait. Her colours in real life were more vivid with more depth so I incorporated this in the process. Pastel was the obvious choice for the soft fur effect. Due to her playful hunting attributes incorporating a bee in the finished portrait added more of her personality to this piece. Her owner Rhonda was thrilled with the finished result.

"Greylea Contraire"

This commission was of the showwinning mare "Greylea Contraire" owned and adored by Andrea Mahon. Working off an extremely high quality photograph, I was able to capture not only the form but the essence of the personality of my subject.  We decided to remove the sash to unclutter the reach of neck, added a soft muted background to define the subject and enhanced more detail in the darker areas around the eyes and neck allowing dapples to be more visible which in turn gives a more 3D effect to the painting.  The garland colour was toned down a little to give a less dominating presence.

This professional photograph was taken by Equine Photographer Angie Rickard. I cannot stress enough how important it is that you have the best quality photo available for a commission work. The better the photo the better I can capture the subject in a portrait.
I would like to thank Angie for the kind approval to use her photo for this portrait. She is present and available at most major show events and can photograph at extremely reasonable prices if you do not have good quality photos yourself. Her email is:

"Mates"

This is a commission I completed for a customer of a border collie and a golden retriever. I took the photos myself on my property but your own photos can be used as long as they are clear and good quality.  Dogs and horses alike are best taken on a bright overcast day. If it is sunny, try and get a 3/4 head shot, best described as seeing one whole eye and partial view of the other eye. So it would be a partially side on view. Dogs especially look great if someone is standing to the side of the photographer getting their attention while they are in a sitting position. This usually captures a lot of alertness in the eye. To get this shot I got a friend to hold my small dog in their arms to get the attention of the subjects. I was then able to soften the background, take out the leads and collars and open their eyes a fraction to account for the bright sun and soften the more extreme shadows. They were extremely happy with the result of their pastel painting.
